SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the field of transport machine building. Energy absorption element for a vehicle bumper assembly comprises an open-cell foam, a magnetorheological fluid and a magnetic field source. Magnetorheological fluid is located in the open-cell foam. Magnetic field source serves to selectively control the magnetic field in the open-cell foam. Open-cell foam includes cell walls that cover the magnetorheological fluid, open cells unfilled with a magnetorheological fluid, and a regulator. Bumper assembly for a vehicle comprises a bumper bar and said energy absorbing member associated with the bumper bar. Method for adjusting the stiffness of the energy absorbing member of the vehicle bumper assembly, which comprising monitoring the vehicle speed, providing a magnetic field in the magnetorheological fluid and varying the magnetic field based on the change in vehicle speed.
EFFECT: improved absorption of collision energy.
