FIELD: transportation.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to an energy absorption device and versions of an energy absorption system for a vehicle. Vehicle energy absorption system comprises energy absorbing device (EA) from foamed material for transverse installation in front of bumper, having multiple cavities formed therein. Variable stiffness elements are located in the cavities, built into the energy absorption device and formed from cellular foam treated with magnetorheological fluid. Electromagnetic devices are jointly located with corresponding elements and are supplied with energy for creation of magnetic fields acting on magnetorheological elements, and thereby increase rigidity of elements. When power supply elements increase total rigidity of EA/elements system. When electromagnetic devices are not powered by energy, stiffness of EA itself is relatively low to meet pedestrian protection targets. At speeds at which protection of pedestrians is not required, but low-speed damage targets are important, electromagnetic devices are powered by energy to ensure rigidity of the EA/elements system.
EFFECT: improved safety.
