SUBSTANCE: invention relates to multistage metal hydride hydrogen compressors and can be used in power engineering, chemical technology, gas supply and other industries. Compressor comprises at least two compression modules, wherein each module includes at least two compression stages, each of which constitutes one or more metal hydride containers equipped with at least one hydrogen inlet and outlet pipe. It contains a heating and cooling device, a gas distribution system including gas manifolds of compression stages, a hydrogen inlet manifold connected to gas manifolds, intermediate gas manifolds equipped with buffer tanks, a hydrogen outlet manifold, a heating and cooling system that provides alternate heating and cooling of metal hydride containers. Control system ensures the operation of the heating and cooling system for specified periods of time.
EFFECT: presence of a buffer for receiving and transferring a sufficient amount of hydrogen from the heated previous compression stage to a cooled subsequent compression stage increases the productivity of the compressor.
