SUBSTANCE: invention relates to vinyl polymers with corresponding polymer characteristics for use as flame retardants. Vinyl polymers for use as flame retardants contain halohydrin and epoxy, the polymers have a weighted average molecular weight (Mw) of at least 40,000 Da, halogen content in the range from 0.6 to 55 wt.%, such a content of oxirane groups which is such that the oxirane oxygen ranges from 1 % to 3 % by weight with respect to the halogen content, and having a weight loss of 5% at a temperature of at least 240 °C. Also a flame retardant polymer composition and the use of vinyl polymers as a flame retardant in polymer compositions are claimed.
EFFECT: resulting compositions have been tested for flame resistance and showed compliance with class V2.
