SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an overhead luggage compartment for airplanes, comprising a stationary luggage compartment element which can be secured to a structural element and a movable luggage compartment element which can be loaded with a piece of luggage, said compartments being connected together by a hinge. Movable luggage compartment element is rotatable between an open and a closed position and a device for holding the movable luggage compartment element in the open position. Holding device has an element connected to the hinge between the stationary luggage compartment element and the movable luggage compartment element. Hinge in the open position of the movable luggage compartment element is configured for displacement. Force transmitting element in the open position of the movable luggage compartment element, due to the displacement of the hinge, is in an unloaded state in an active position, and in a loaded state in an inactive position. In the active position of the force transmitting element, resisting moment is generated for opposing the rotation of the movable luggage compartment element from the open position towards the closed position.
