This method for encoding an image descriptor based on gradient histograms into a transformed descriptor contains transformed subdescriptors, wherein each gradient histogram contains a plurality of histogram bins, and each subdescriptor contains a set of values, and the mentioned subdescriptors are generated in accordance with the element utilization list determining the index of subdescriptors from the set of subdescriptors and the index of the elements from the set of values, at the same time, the subdescriptors are grouped according to their distance from the center of the image descriptor and are assigned a coding priority.

EFFECT: increased productivity, reduced computational complexity and the amount of information needed to create scalable bitstreams.
