FIELD: tobacco industry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to activated carbon suitable for smoking articles, to filters containing such activated carbon, and corresponding smoking articles. Above smoking article includes a smokable material and an activated carbon material downstream of the smokable material, however, the activated carbon material has a ratio of narrow micropore volume to total micropore volume of about 0.9 or less, where the activated carbon material may contain surface oxygen at a concentration of about 5,000 micromole per gram or less, as determined by heat programmed desorption. This method comprises providing an activated carbon material having a ratio of narrow micropore volume to a total micropore volume of about 0.9 or less and containing surface oxygen at a concentration of about 5,000 micromoles per gram or less, as determined by thermally programmed desorption; providing a filtering material for use in a smoking article; and combining the activated carbo material and filtering material to form a filter for such smoking article.
EFFECT: use of activated carbon in the filters of smoking articles, where activated carbon is more effective for removing at least selected smoke constituents than the existing activated carbon that has been used or proposed for use in smoking articles.
