FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the production of materials with a metal matrix of aluminum or its alloys containing gadolinium, and can be used in atomic energy for the manufacture of neutron-absorbing screens and partitions, transport and packaging containers. Method of obtaining neutron-absorbing aluminum matrix composite material with gadolinium content in the amount of 1–10 wt.% includes mixing or mechano-alloying of a mixture of chips and/or granules of aluminum or its alloy with dispersed particles of a gadolinium compound containing gadolinium in the amount of 1–10 wt.%, cold pressing, heating the workpieces to a temperature above the melting point of the aluminum matrix alloy, mixing until a homogeneous suspension appears and a uniform distribution of dispersed particles in the melt volume, cooling the resulting suspension to produce a cast billet. According to other options after melting and overheating of the aluminum matrix material to a temperature above its melting point, obtained powder material is introduced into the melt and the suspension is mixed or mixed with ultrasonic treatment, after which it is cooled to form a cast billet.
EFFECT: invention is directed to the creation of aluminum matrix radiation-protective materials, in terms of neutron-absorbing properties that exceed boron-containing aluminum matrix materials, and the foundry properties provide the ability to manufacture products from them using liquid-phase technologies.
