FIELD: technological processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the production of powders of refractory carbides of transition metals of the IV and V subgroups with the melting point exceeding 3,000 °C. Method includes heat treatment of the charge, washing and drying the powder. In this case, heat treatment is carried out on the mixture consisting of a transition metal oxide of the fourth and fifth subgroups, pure carbon and calcium hydride or a mixture of calcium hydride with a calorific agent in the form of metallic calcium, at the temperature of 1,000–1,300 °C for at least 6 hours to obtain an intermediate product in the form of a mixture of the specified metal carbide and calcium oxide. Washing is carried out by means of hydrometallurgical treatment with water and of the solution of hydrochloric acid to obtain the powder having the dispersion of from 1 nm to 500 nm.

EFFECT: obtaining of the powder with a single-crystal structure of particles, a high homogeneity of the phase composition and a narrow distribution of particle size distribution are ensured.
