FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: The invention relates to powder metallurgy, in particular to the production of powders of refractory carbides of transition metals of the fifth subgroup with a melting point above 3000 °C. A charge is prepared from a mixture of tantalum and / or niobium and magnesium. The amount of magnesium is determined by the formula MMg= k ⋅MMe⋅ S Me, where MMg is the mass of magnesium, g, MMe is the mass of tantalum and/or niobium, g, SMe is the specific surface area of tantalum and/or niobium powder, m2/g, k is the empirical coefficient, k =0.004-0.010 g/m2. The charge is heat-treated at a temperature of 650-850 °C for 2-9 hours in the presence of a carbon-containing reagent in the form of a mixture of organic liquid vapor and inert gas to produce a powder of tantalum and/or niobium carbide and magnesium oxide. Then the resulting powder is washed with water and hydrochloric acid solution and the powder is dried.
EFFECT: The present invention reduces the time of the process of producing the powder of the final product, decreases the process temperature, prevents the use of explosive reagents.
