SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of thermal spraying and a device for applying a coating to inner surface (24) of cylinder (10) of an internal combustion engine or a piston machine. Method of thermal spraying of the coating on inner surface (24) of cylinder (10) of an internal combustion engine or a piston machine includes applying thermally sprayed layer (24) on inner surface (26) of cylinder (10), performing in the process of applying a layer using optical sensor device (12) of the registration of particles of sprayed material (14) in controlled area (15), located outside sprayed jet (13), while in controlled area (15) outside sprayed jet (13) particles of sprayed material (14) are detected, the parameters of which exceed their specified threshold value, it is assumed that an error occurred in the coating process and that the cylinder is subjected to additional processing. Nozzle (11) for thermal spraying of the coating contains optical sensor device (12) for recording and controlling the parameters of the particles of sprayed material (14) in area (15), located outside spray jet (13), which is oriented to region (15) above upper surface (17) of base of said cylinder (10).
EFFECT: invention aims to simplify the control of the coating.
