SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for evaluating content (C) of an effective component of a reducing agent for treating exhaust gases of an engine placed in container (205), in which system (240) for providing heat transfer is provided. method comprises the following steps: determining (s410; s420) prevailing volume (V) and temperature (T1) of said reducing agent in said container (205), determining (s430) prevailing temperature (T2) of said system (240) for providing heat transfer, determining (s440) prevailing temperature (T3) of the medium surrounding said container (205), determining (s450) the average rate of change of temperature (Tprim) for said reducing agent for a given period of time, determining (s460) said content (C) of an effective component of said reducing agent based on the above defined parameters.
