FIELD: internal combustion engines.
SUBSTANCE: engine (10) system (50) comprises rotatable flow guide (212) extending away from shaft (216) into intake port (202). Rotatable flow guide (212) has flow altering surface (214) positioned upstream of intake valve (18). Rotatable flow guide (212) has a first side with a curved contour. Flow altering surface (214) is configured to generating tumble and swirl flow patterns of intake airflow entering cylinder (16) through intake valve (18) in a plurality of active positions. Flow guide (212) actuator (218) rotates flow altering surface (214) to alter the tumble and swirl flow patterns of the intake airflow. Shaft (216) has rotational axis (221) that intersects stem (206) of intake valve (18). Embodiment of the engine system and a method for operating the engine system are disclosed.
EFFECT: technical result is the possibility of altering the tumble and swirl flow patterns of the intake airflow during engine operation.
