SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in internal combustion engines with turbochargers. Method of operating turbocharger wastegate valve (26) of internal combustion engine (10) comprises receiving data from one or more sensors via controller (12) and sending a non-closed position command for turbocharger wastegate valve (26) via controller (12). Before executing the position command, turbocharger wastegate valve (26) is temporarily closed to determine the current fully closed position via controller (12). Position command is executed in response to one of the parameters relating to fluid flow upstream of turbocharger compressor (60), fuel, temperature and time associated with the current fully closed position, rate of change of required torque, engine rotation speed and engine load, threshold time duration, and threshold temperature change, and residence time. Versions of the turbocharger system in an internal combustion engine are disclosed.
EFFECT: technical result is to increase the accuracy of reading the position of the wastegate valve.
