SUBSTANCE: proposed method relates to instrumentation technology and can be used in automated production systems, as well as when measuring the length of radioactive objects, segments of thin wires and other electrically conductive objects, the measurement of which by known methods is difficult. In the method of measuring the length of an electrically conductive object based on the excitation of an electromagnetic oscillation in an object, measuring the resonant frequency of this oscillation and calculating the length of an object from the magnitude of this frequency, the object is used as a quarter-wave whip antenna, and the frequency of the first series resonance of this antenna is measured, moreover, when measuring the resonant frequency, a measuring parallel LC circuit is used in the antenna power supply circuit, which is tuned to the resonant frequency of the antenna so that the frequency response of the oscillatory system formed by this circuit and the antenna has a symmetrical appearance, and the length of the object is determined by the formula l=Ac/f, where f is the resonant frequency of the antenna, c is the speed of light, and A=0.22–0.24 is a coefficient whose value depends on the diameter of the antenna, the area of the counterweight and conductive objects located near the antenna.
