FIELD: transportation.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of railway transport, namely to methods and facilities for non-destructive testing of materials, and can be used for diagnostics of rails and other extended railway track objects. Method enables to obtain radar image and geometry of rail surface, consists in irradiating rail fragment with radar signal and recording the reflected signal using two or more electronically switched antennae located on the train and directed towards the rail, measuring the speed and position of the train relative to the rail. When the antenna system moves together with the train, the two-dimensional synthesized aperture is formed by movement and electronic switching of the antennae. Due to this, using the appropriate radar signal processing, the radar images have high spatial resolution. Transmitting and receiving antennae emit and record radiation in several polarization channels, due to which on the radar images the contrast of small defects as compared to the wavelength is increased.

EFFECT: as a result, the method enables to obtain not only a radar image, but also the geometry of the rail surface.
