FIELD: measuring equipment.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to measuring equipment, namely, to radio location, and can be used on railways (Rwy) to determine such parameters of movement of the locomotive as instantaneous speed, distance travelled, direction of movement. The technical result is achieved due to the application, in the claimed system for determining the speed of the locomotive and the direction of movement, of two consecutive short-range radars placed in the undercar space of the locomotive, as well as markers along the geometry of the Rwy track, constituting plates for attaching rails to sleepers, processing signals reflected from the markers.

EFFECT: increase in the accuracy of measurement of the speed of movement of the locomotive on the Rwy track, especially at low speeds, from starting, determining the direction of movement.
