FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to medicine and represents a diagnostic technique for severity of purulent cholangitis in patients with mechanical jaundice with establishing an optimal surgical approach to treatment, consisting in examining a patient, characterized by that the patient's blood is analyzed by gas chromatography to determine the amount of acetic acid and the concentration of acetic acid equal to 0.31–0.34 mmol/l, the presence of mild degree of purulent cholangitis, in which biliary decompression is not indicated, with concentration of acetic acid equal to 0.35–0.41 mmol/l, presence of moderate severity of purulent cholangitis, in which biliary decompression is indicated with no therapeutic effect, and with concentration of acetic acid equal to 0.42 mmol/l or more, presence of severe degree of purulent cholangitis, in which emergency biliary decompression is indicated.

EFFECT: invention provides higher objectivity and accuracy of diagnosis of severity of purulent cholangitis in mechanical jaundice.
