SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to a method and a device for determining operational parameters of a pumping unit for use in wells. Method of determining operational parameters of a pumping unit for use in a well includes: determining first angle of crank arm in pumping unit; determining a first torque coefficient for a pumping unit, comprising a rate of change of position of the polished rod relative to the angle of the crank arm of the pumping unit; determining the speed at which the engine of the pumping unit is to move the polished rod at a reference speed of the polished rod, based on the first angle of the crank arm, the first torque coefficient and the reference speed of the polished rod; movement of the polished rod during the first cycle of the pumping unit using the engine; determination of the first values of the number of engine pulses during the first cycle, using the first sensor at first moments, wherein the first moments are distributed at equal intervals; determining first polished rod position values during first cycle using second sensor in first moments; binding the first values of the number of pulses with the corresponding values from the first position values for calibrating the pumping unit processor; and creating a look-up table using first values of the number of pulses and first position values obtained at first moments to display a correlation between the first values of the number of pulses and the first position values.
