FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for decarboxylation of carbohydrate in an electrochemical cell, comprising: providing an electrochemical cell having two chambers, separated by cationic membrane for transfer of monovalent cations between two chambers, wherein first chamber comprises catholyte and cathode and second chamber contains carbohydrate acid, anolyte and anode, wherein carbohydrate acid is at least 10 % neutralized as a salt of said monovalent cation; supplying electric current to said cell to form aldehyde of carbohydrate in anolyte and hydroxide ion of monovalent cation in catholyte; inducing migration of said hydroxide ion through a cationic membrane from catholyte to an anolyte, wherein said cationic membrane is permeable to hydroxide ion to at least partially maintain a ratio of monovalent cation to carbohydrate acid; adding a cation hydroxide selected from a group consisting of: sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide, to an anolyte; wherein the current output for the monovalent cation transfer through the cation-exchange membrane is less than 90 % and wherein the ratio of the monovalent cation to the carbohydrate acid in the anolyte is maintained so, in order to preserve neutralization of available carbohydrate acid for decarboxylation.
EFFECT: use of the present invention enables to provide a method for electrolytic decarboxylation of carbohydrate acids simultaneously with electrolytic solutions of hydroxides of alkali metals or solutions of ammonium hydroxide.
