FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing a copolymer containing alkyl methacrylate and maleic anhydride. Method of producing a sulfur-free copolymer containing monomer links based on alkyl methacrylate and maleic anhydride-based monomer units are realized by polymerisation in solution of one or more alkyl methacrylates and maleic anhydride in a solvent in the presence of a radical polymerisation initiator, said method comprising the steps of: a) obtaining an initial reaction solution containing maleic anhydride, part of a radical initiator and a solvent, b) adding an additional solution containing one or more alkyl methacrylates and part of a radical polymerisation initiator to the initial reaction solution, and c) adding an additional portion of the radical polymerisation initiator to the reaction solution containing the initial reaction solution and the completely added additive, wherein the sulfur-free copolymer has a number-average molecular weight in range of 4,000 to 18,000 g/mol and a polydispersity coefficient in range of 1 to 5, and wherein molar ratio of one or more alkyl methacrylates and maleic anhydride in the sulfur-free copolymer is in range of 10:1 to 1:1 in terms of total molar amounts of one or more alkyl methacrylates and maleic anhydride used to obtain a sulfur-free copolymer. Disclosed also is a copolymer obtained using the disclosed method with the above characteristics.

EFFECT: obtaining a copolymer with high degree of conversion of monomers and low content of residual monomers.
