FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of coating a substrate, in particular a wood substrate. Method of coating a substrate involves: a) obtaining a liquid aqueous coating composition, wherein the composition contains an acrylic resin as a binder, one or more surfactants, a coalescent solvent and a thickener; b) foaming a liquid aqueous coating composition to produce a foamed coating composition; c) applying a layer of the foamed coating composition onto the substrate; and d) providing evaporation of gas from the layer of the foamed coating composition and enabling drying of the coating composition to form a homogeneous non-foamed dried coating. Liquid aqueous coating composition obtained at step a), is a mordant for wood and contains acrylic resin with concentration in range of 4 to 8 wt. %, contains a thickener with concentration in range of 0.05 to 2.0 wt. % and is characterized by a solids content of at most 25 wt. % with respect to the total weight of the liquid aqueous coating composition. Liquid aqueous coating composition contains less than 1 % with respect to the total weight of the liquid coating, any binding polymer or binder polymer precursor other than acrylic resin. Invention also relates to a foamed aqueous coating composition obtained using steps a) and b).

EFFECT: technical result is stability of foam for easy application, possibility of application on vertical surface without appearance of formation and smearing of wet coating layer to produce homogeneous non-foamed dried coating, having acceptable appearance and not including visible gas bubbles.
