FIELD: manufacturing technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing coated metal substrate (3), a coated metal article, a workpiece made by cutting a metal article, a bipolar plate and a method of making a bipolar plate. Substrate (3) is made from stainless steel. Layer based on chromium nitride is deposited on substrate (3) as a result of physical deposition from the gas phase (PVD) in deposition unit (14). Unit (14) is used, which includes precipitation chamber (20) and chromium target (22) assembled in deposition chamber (20). Deposition chamber (20) includes deposition area (30) having a length which is less than the length of deposition chamber (20) and at least a first forbidden region (32). During deposition, chromium nitride is deposited on substrate (3) only in deposition region (30), and chromium nitride does not deposit on substrate (3) in first forbidden region (32).

EFFECT: disclosed are a metal strip, a bipolar plate and a corresponding manufacturing method.
