FIELD: measurement technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of determining mechanical characteristics of ceramics and can be used to assess ultimate tensile strength of brittle materials. Method comprises stretching a sample by applying a static tensile load thereto, measuring load destructing the sample. Tensile load in working part of sample is created by application of static compressing load to reversing device, with sample installed in it with flat mutually perpendicular heads, with formation of gaps between them and staples. Upper head of sample rests on support bracket, and compressing load is transferred by loading bracket to lower head of sample. Cross-sectional dimensions of working part of sample, dimensions of heads, fillet annulus radii in transient parts of sample from its heads to working part, determined by calculated method from constructed finite-element model of stress state of sample, condition of ratio of maximum tensile stresses in its working part is satisfied at observance of homogeneous stressed state to maximum main stresses in heads and transient parts of sample to value of not less than 2.0.
EFFECT: possibility and high efficiency of determining ultimate strength at axial tension of high-strength structural ceramics.
