Disclosed is an isolated attenuated Leptospira interrogans for inducing an immunogenic or protective response from a Leptospira infection, characterized by that Leptospira interrogans contains non-functional protein fliM after expression as a result of one of the following: mutation or deletion of segment of fliM gene, which is required for expression of functional protein fliM; mutation or deletion of one or more nucleotides required for expression of functional protein fliM, or characterized by that Leptospira interrogans contains deletion of full gene fliM L. interrogans, at which fliM protein is not expressed. Disclosed is a composition for inducing an immunogenic or protective response from a Leptospira infection containing said recombinant or attenuated Leptospira interrogans, wherein the composition further contains one or more carriers, diluents or excipients which are pharmaceutically acceptable or veterinary. Disclosed is a method for vaccinating an animal or inducing an immunogenic or protective response to Leptospira infection using said composition or said attenuated Leptospira interrogans.

EFFECT: group of inventions enables as a result of vaccination with attenuated Leptospira interrogans to reduce mortality, clinical symptoms of the disease, infection, urinary excretion, renal carrier and renal damage following infection with homologous virulent Leptospira interrogans and heterologous virulent Leptospira Interrogans, and provides protection against homologous infection and cross protection against heterologous infection.
