FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemical processing of peat, specifically to peat benzylation, and can be used to produce thermoplastic and hydrophobic biostable binding materials for plate composite materials. Method involves treatment of initial air-dry peat first with sodium hydroxide for 10–60 minutes, and then benzyl chloride with intensive mechanical grinding for 10–60 minutes without addition of water in molar ratio of 0.5–2 mol sodium hydroxide and 0.5–2 moles of benzyl chloride per 1 mole of OH-groups of peat at 25 °C.
EFFECT: technical result consists in expansion of resource base, shorter duration and lower temperature of benzylation process.
