SUBSTANCE: invention relates to design of composite components of a vehicle and relates to an instrument panel and a method of forming a vehicle component. Instrument panel includes a base having a first plurality of chopped carbon fibres in the first polyamide resin and a reinforced expansion bonded to the base and having a second plurality of chopped carbon fibres in the second polyamide resin. First set of chopped carbon fibres and the first plurality of glass fibres in the base are separated so that each of the carbon fibres and glass fibres are concentrated within the respective parts of the driver side and the passenger side of the base. Expanded structural channel has second plurality of chopped glass fibres in third polyamide resin. Channel, reinforcement and base are connected to form hollow tube.
EFFECT: invention provides creation of light vehicle components with better or comparable mechanical characteristics compared to traditional components.
