FIELD: soil science; measurement technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to construction soil science and is used in engineering-geological surveys for construction on swelling soils, in particular, for determining free swelling and swelling pressure of soils. Method for determining characteristics of soil swelling includes soaking and holding till stabilization of soil sample deformation with known values of plasticity number, natural moisture content, humidity at yield point and porosity coefficient, loading soil sample with pressure and recording values of soil sample deformation and acting pressure at all stages of soaking and loading, wherein tests are carried out on one soil sample, loading of which is performed with constant rate of change of pressure, providing completion of consolidation with specified tolerance, note here that soil sample and active pressure deformation values are recorded after every 0.005 mm of soil sample deformation, and soil sample is loaded to pressure at which value of sample deformation becomes zero.
EFFECT: high accuracy and reliability of determining soil swelling characteristics, shorter test time and labor input.
