FIELD: construction.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to construction soil science and is used in engineering-geological surveys for construction on swelling soils, in particular for determining swelling pressure and soil swelling at different pressure values. Method for determining characteristics of swelling of soil involves loading a given soil sample pressure with known values of plasticity, natural moisture, moisture content at the yield point and porosity coefficient, soaking with curing until stabilization of sample deformation and unloading to zero pressure with registration of soil sample deformation values and acting pressure at all loading, soaking and unloading stages and determination of soil swelling pressure as per plot of soil swelling deformation dependence on pressure, wherein testing is carried out on one soil sample, and loading of soil sample to a given pressure and unloading to zero pressure is carried out with a constant rate of change of pressure simulating the loading rate of foundation base, but not higher than the limiting rate providing completion of consolidation with a given tolerance and determined depending on physical properties of soil, wherein the values of the soil sample and the actual pressure deformation are recorded through each 0.005 mm of the soil sample deformation, and the soil sample swelling deformation values are determined as the difference in the swelling deformation readings and the soil sample deposition at the same pressure value.

EFFECT: high reliability and accuracy of determining soil swelling characteristics, shorter test time and labor costs.
