FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions discloses a substrate for absorbing liquid and a method for making such a substrate. Substrate comprises a polymer system with a double-network polymer, comprising a crosslinked covalently bonded polymer and an ionically bonded polymer, in which some of the ionic bonds are broken, wherein the broken bonds are formed anew at rehydration of the polymer, where the substrate is characterized by moisture content equal to 15 % or less. Method involves obtaining a hydrogel with a double-network hydrogel, elongation thereof under action of a force in at least one direction, dehydration of the elongated hydrogel with formation of a substantially dehydrated system, termination of the force to obtain a substrate.

EFFECT: inventions provide a material which is contracted in one direction and expands in the other direction when absorbing a liquid, such as water or body fluids.
