SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 2-acetoxyalkanoic acid ester, involving heating an ester mixture α-hydroxyalkanoic acid and at least one mole of alkyl ether of acetic acid per mole of ester α-hydroxyalkanoic acid in reaction vessel to temperature of 190–230 °C at excess pressure in the presence of a re-esterification catalyst for conversion of at least part of the ester α-hydroxyalkanoic acid and alkyl ester of acetic acid to ester of 2-acetoxyalkanoic acid and at least one alkanol or phenol compound, wherein content of water in reaction vessel during reaction is maintained at level below 0.5 wt. %.

EFFECT: in contrast to previous methods of producing esters of 2-acetoxyalkanoic acid, this process proceeds with high output and high selectivity with respect to the desired product.
