SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to esters of oligo-hydroxycarboxylic acids, cosmetic and pharmaceutical agents that contain these esters, as well as the use of these esters as thickening agents, especially for compositions containing surfactants. Composition for use as a thickener contains a mixture of compounds of general formula (I), where R1 represents n-hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, 2-propylheptyl, n-undecyl, n-dodecyl, n-tridecyl, n-tetradecyl, n-pentadecyl, n-hexadecyl, n-heptadecyl, n-octadecyl, n-nonadecyl, arachinyl, behenyl, lignocerinyl, melissinyl, isotridecyl, isostearyl, oleyl, linoleyl, linolenyl, or a combination of at least two of these residues, R2 is independently selected from hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, -OH, -COOR4, -CH2-OH and -CH2-COOR4, wherein the residues R4 are selected from methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, n-pentyl, isoamyl, n-hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, n nonyl, n-decyl, 2-propylheptyl, n-undecyl, n-dodecyl, n-tridecyl, n-tetradecyl, n-pentadecyl, n-hexadecyl, n-heptadecyl, n-octadecyl, n-nonadecyl, arachinyl, behenyl, lignocerinyl, melissinyl, isotridecyl, isostearyl, oleyl, linoleyl, linolenyl, or a combination of at least two of these residues, R3 is independently selected from hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, -OH, -COOR5, -CH2-OH and -CH2-COOR5, wherein the residues R5 are selected from methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, n-pentyl, isoamyl, n-hexyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, n nonyl, n-decyl, 2-propylheptyl, n-undecyl, n-dodecyl, n-tridecyl, n-tetradecyl, n-pentadecyl, n-hexadecyl, n-heptadecyl, n-octadecyl, n-nonadecyl, arachinyl, behenyl, lignocerinyl, melissinyl, isotridecyl, isostearyl, oleyl, linoleyl, linolenyl, or a combination of at least two of these residues, n on average is a value from 0.2 to 20, m1 and m2 independently of one another denote 0 or 1, which is obtained using a method in which at least one hydroxycarboxylic acid of general formula (I.A) is reacted in an esterification reaction, wherein the esterification is carried out in the presence of at least one alcohol R1-OH, or the esterification product of hydroxycarboxylic acid(s) (I.A) is then reacted with at least one alcohol R1-OH.
