SUBSTANCE: invention relates to optical communication and can be used to receive optical signals. According to one embodiment, the optical coherent receiver has a heterodyne configuration, wherein in this configuration, spectral-efficient multi-level DP M-QAM modulation formats, such as DP-16QAM, DP-64QAM and DP-256QAM, in which the optical signal can be presented in form of two polarized modes, each of which is modulated with M-QAM formats, i.e. such as 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM, respectively, and digital signal processing methods based on coherent optical communication, which have significant performance advantages compared to direct detection, which enable to recover information on the phase of the optical signal.
EFFECT: high efficiency of detecting a received signal and high spectral efficiency of the communication system.
