SUBSTANCE: invention relates to communication engineering and can be used in optical communication systems. Method comprises: receiving an optical signal; obtaining digitized discrete measurements associated with the optical signal; recording digitized discrete measurements; processing of recorded discrete measurements in off-line mode. Processing in off-line mode includes: use of digitized discrete measurements to determine information characterizing said at least one optical channel used to transmit an optical signal; using the obtained information to estimate the value of said at least one optical channel operating characteristic describing said at least one optical channel; and directing value of said at least one optical channel operation characteristic to network control element; wherein evaluation of value of said at least one operating characteristic of optical channel is carried out in the absence of preliminary information on type of modulation of signal in optical channel.

EFFECT: technical result consists in improvement of monitoring accuracy of communication channels.
