SUBSTANCE: image display device comprises assigning device (132) for assigning a synthesis plane (CS) at a location outside the rear of the first vehicle; connecting device (133) for connection of rear image (111B), obtained by rear image forming device (11B) for image of rear sector of first vehicle, and rear side image (111BL, 111BR) obtained by image forming device (11B) for image of rear lateral sector of first vehicle in order to create synthesized image (111C), on which environment displayed on rear image, and the environment displayed on the rear lateral image are connected without distortion in the location of the synthesis plane, wherein in the presence of a second vehicle behind the first vehicle, the assigning device sets the synthesis plane at a location different from the location of the synthesis plane in case the second vehicle is absent from the rear of the first vehicle.
