SUBSTANCE: invention relates to communication engineering and is intended for transmitting and receiving data in a multicarrier communication system. Device selects an adaptive modulation, coding and signaling circuit in a communication system. In particular, the modulation and coding scheme to be used for data transmission is selected from a set of predefined modulation and coding schemes. Preliminary set definition is performed by selecting a set out of a plurality of predefined sets. Sets are of the same size, whereby the modulation and coding selection indicator signaled to select the modulation and coding scheme can advantageously be applied to any of the selected sets. Among other things, the second set includes circuits with modulation not covered by circuits of the first set, and which has higher order than any modulation in the first set.

EFFECT: high efficiency and robustness owing to MCS adaptivity to channel state.
