SUBSTANCE: invention relates to selection of an adaptive modulation, coding and signaling scheme in a communication system. Modulation and coding scheme to be used for data transmission is selected from a set of predefined modulation and coding schemes. Preliminary set definition is performed by selecting a set out of a plurality of predefined sets. Sets have the same size, therefore, the modulation and coding selection indicator signaled to select the modulation and coding scheme may be preferentially applied to any of the selected sets. Among other things, the second set includes schemes with modulation not covered by the first set schemes, and which has a higher order than any modulation in the first set.

EFFECT: increase efficiency and robustness by ensuring adaptation of the MCS to the channel status.
