FIELD: data processing.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the selection of adaptive modulation and coding scheme and signaling in a communication system. Modulation and coding scheme to be used for data transmission is selected from a set of predefined modulation and coding schemes. Preliminary set definition is performed by selecting a set out of a plurality of predefined sets. Sets are of the same size, whereby the modulation and coding selection indicator signaled to select the modulation and coding scheme can advantageously be applied to any of the selected sets. Among other things, the second set includes schemes with modulation not covered by the first set schemes, and which has a higher order than any modulation in the first set.
EFFECT: increase efficiency and robustness by ensuring adaptation of the MCS to the channel status.
