SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a cutting tool with a coating and a method for production thereof. Cutting tool comprises a substrate and a coating. Coating comprises a PVD layer (A), which is a compound of formula Ti_1-xSi_xC_aN_bO_c, 0.10 < x ≤ 0.30, 0 ≤ a ≤ 0.75, 0.25 ≤ b ≤ 1, 0 ≤ c ≤ 0.2, a + b + c = 1. PVD-layer (A) is a solid solution with NaCl-type structure. Cutting tool is made with PVD-layer (A) by cathode-arc evaporation using pulse offset voltage from about -40 to about -450 V on substrate, and using a duty cycle of less than about 12 %, and a pulse bias rate of less than about 10 kHz.
