FIELD: biotechnology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of biotechnology. Invention is a method for selecting Betula pendula maternal plants producing seed offspring with different somatic cell genetic material stability by the level of fluctuating asymmetry of the leaf, differing by the fact that at least five accounting phenotypically healthy birch trees are grown, having reached the generative age, on each analyzed territory, not less than 50 leaves of approximately equal size are collected from the maximum number of shortened branches of the lower crown, relatively uniformly around the tree, fluctuating asymmetry is determined as the arithmetic mean ratio of the difference to the sum of sheet measurements on the left and on the right, referred to the number of features; analyzing fluctuating asymmetry by five parameters of each sheet (width of left and right halves of sheet, length of vein of second order, second from base of sheet, distance between bases of first and second veins of second order, distance between ends of same veins, angle between main vein and second from second-order vein sheet bases), calculating the fluctuating asymmetry value of the leaf of the parent plant, the derived values being compared to value of 0.020, above which the maternal specimen produces the mutable sperm progeny, otherwise – weakly mutable.
EFFECT: using as criterion for selection of Betula pendula maternal plants the level of fluctuation asymmetry of the leaf plate enables to isolate specimens producing seed offspring with high or low stability of genetic material.
