SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the pharmaceutical industry and to medicine, specifically to a method for neutralizing excess gastric acid in an individual or a lower animal and to a method of treating a gastrointestinal disorder in a human or a lower animal. Method for neutralizing excess gastric acid in an individual or a lower animal, comprising orally administering to said human or lower animal an effective amount of a liquid antacid composition containing an antacid, citrus extract and optionally one or more other pharmaceutically acceptable excipients in an aqueous carrier, wherein the citrus extract is present in amount of 0.025 to 1.90 % and where the citrus extract is a water-soluble extract of citrus fruit, selected from C. aurantium amara (bitter orange), citrus creticulata (mandarin orange) and citrus sinensis (orange tree). Method of treating a gastrointestinal disorder in an individual or a lower animal, comprising administering to said human or lower animal an effective amount of a liquid antacid composition. Using said composition in said methods provides excellent resistance to growth of microorganisms without detriment to acid-neutralizing activity of antacid, improved taste.

EFFECT: when using said composition there is no increase on 14th and 28th days relative to the initial counted number for bacteria, yeast and mold.
