FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to modernization of multilayer ammonium converter with intermediate cooling. Described is a method of upgrading a multilayer ammonium converter (1) comprising a plurality of adiabatic catalytic layers, including a first catalyst layer (3) and one or more subsequent catalytic layers (4, 5) arranged one after another such that the outflow of the layer further reacts in next layer; at least a first interlayer heat exchanger (6) arranged between the first catalytic bed (3) and the second catalytic bed (4) for cooling the outflow of the first layer before passing to the second layer, and, optionally, the next interlayer heat exchanger(s) (7) arranged between successive layers, wherein the method is characterized by converting the first catalyst layer (3) into an isothermal catalytic bed. Multilayer ammonium converter is also described.
EFFECT: technical result is increase in conversion output and/or capacity of converter by providing more fine control of reaction temperature.
