FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing chloromethylated polystyrene which can be used in organic synthesis when producing ion-exchange resins and selective membranes. Method of producing chloromethylated polystyrene involves first reacting linear polystyrene with formals in thionyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst – tin tetrachloride for 0.1–0.75 hours at 0–10 °C. Reaction mass is then washed with carbon tetrachloride and subsequent hot extraction with anhydrous alcohol. 1,3-dioxolane is used as a formal. Molar ratio of polystyrene : 1,3-dioxolane : tin (IV) tetrachloride is 1:(2–6):(0.02–0.1).
EFFECT: invention significantly reduces the amount of reagents used – cyclic formal, catalyst, organic solvent, and obtain chloromethylated polystyrene with high degree of chloromethylation.
