FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for producing chloromethylated polystyrene. The method is carried out by the interaction of cross-linked polystyrene with formals in thionyl chloride at a temperature of 0-10°C. Polystyrene is treated with 1,3-dioxane in the presence of a titanium (IV) chloride catalyst at a molar ratio of polystyrene : 1,3-dioxane : titanium (IV) chloride 1 : (2-4) : (0.015-0.075) for 0.1-0.5 h. Purification of cross-linked chloromethylated polystyrene is carried out by washing with carbon tetrachloride, anhydrous alcohols and vacuum drying.
EFFECT: obtaining cross-linked chloromethylated polystyrene with a high degree of chloromethylation by a simple-to-use method that allows use of commercially available compounds, excludes the use of toxic chloroalkyl ethers, is implemented in a single reactor, and makes it possible to significantly reduce the amount of reagents, catalyst and organic solvents used both in the modification process and in product isolation process, does not require heating, which reduces the formation and entry of toxic products into the surrounding air and does not provoke the occurrence of side reactions that worsen the physicochemical, mechanical and operational properties of cross-linked chloromethylated polystyrene granules.
