FIELD: woodworking industry.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to woodworking, in particular to methods and apparatus for evaluating quality of wood materials (lumber, wood boards), specifically to methods and apparatus for detecting defect areas of the outer surface of the test material on both faces and edges (having eased arrises, twigs, cracks, bluish, rot, pitching, wormholes, color change and deformation), and can be used at enterprises as primary stage of wood processing (production of lumber, wood boards), and secondary stage of wood processing (production of wood products after primary treatment). Disclosed method of lumber quality assessment includes lumber supply into control zone, lumber surface illumination, illuminated surface survey, obtained images processing and surface quality assessment. Illumination is carried out alternately in visible spectrum of yellow and blue color and in infrared spectrum. Photographing is performed alternately in each lighting spectrum in five directions with width of shooting area of each direction corresponding to one pixel of digital image, image processing is performed separately for each spectrum, and surface quality evaluation is performed based on analysis of images of different spectra. Proposed device comprises conveyor, lighting system, camera and system of mirrors arranged to reflect faces and edges of lumber. Lighting system includes visible spectrum lamps with color temperature of 2,000–3,500 K and 4,500–7,000 K and infrared spectrum lamp, and the camera is configured to take photos simultaneously in five directions with the width of the shooting area of each direction corresponding to one pixel of the digital image, wherein two directions of photographing are carried out through a system of mirrors.

EFFECT: high resolution of images, based on which final evaluation of the quality of the lumber is carried out, with wider range of detected lumber defects.
