FIELD: chemical or physical processes.

SUBSTANCE: disclosed is a method of producing ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol, involving: contacting at least a portion of a stream of recycled gas containing impurities of vinyl iodide, with material of protective layer to produce treated gas flow, wherein material of protective layer contains carrier material, palladium and gold; and bringing into contact the gas feed stream for epoxidation, containing ethylene, oxygen and at least a portion of treated gas stream, with an epoxidation catalyst to obtain an epoxidation reaction product containing ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide; and contacting at least a portion of the epoxidation reaction product containing ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide, with a lean absorbent in the presence of an iodide-containing carboxylation catalyst to obtain a saturated absorbent stream comprising ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol and a recycle gas stream, containing vinyl iodide impurities. Also disclosed is a reaction system for producing ethylene carbonate and / or ethylene glycol in which a method of producing ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol is carried out, which is described above.

EFFECT: technical result is obtaining an improved system of a protective layer and an improved method of removing certain gaseous iodide-containing impurities from recycled gas stream in production of ethylene oxide, ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol.
