SUBSTANCE: disclosed is a method of producing ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol, involving contacting at least a portion of a stream of recycled gas containing an alkyl iodide impurity and vinyl iodide impurity, with a first protective layer material to obtain a stream of partially treated recycled gas, wherein the first material of the protective layer contains a first carrier material and silver deposited on the first carrier material in amount of 2 to 10 % by weight, contacting at least a portion of the stream of partially treated recycled gas with the second protective layer material to obtain a stream of treated recycled gas, wherein the second material of the protective layer contains a second support material, palladium and gold, and bringing into contact a gas stream for epoxidation containing ethylene, oxygen and at least a portion of treated gas stream with epoxidation catalyst to obtain epoxidation reaction product containing ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide, and contacting at least a portion of the epoxidation reaction product containing ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide with the lean absorbent in the presence of an iodide-containing carboxylation catalyst to obtain a stream of saturated absorbent containing ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol, and a stream of recycled gas containing an alkyl iodide impurity and an admixture of vinyl iodide. Also disclosed is a reaction system for producing ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol in which the method described above is carried out.
EFFECT: obtaining an improved system of a protective layer and an improved method of removing certain gaseous iodide-containing impurities from a stream of recycled gas in the production of ethylene oxide, ethylene carbonate and/or ethylene glycol.
