FIELD: glass industry.
SUBSTANCE: system for gripping and positioning a glass sheet and a method associated therewith are used in a system for controlling optical characteristics of a glass sheet embedded into a processing line of a glass sheet processing system. Clamping and positioning system comprises an outer support frame and a movable support frame for supporting a glass sheet connected to an outer support frame so that the support frame for supporting the glass sheet can be selectively positioned from its first orientation, as a result of which the glass sheet is removed from the conveyor and held on the support frame, into the second orientation, as a result of which the glass sheet is positioned for processing using the optical characteristics monitoring system. System may also include part identifier in form of glass sheet and programmable control device, comprising a logic device for analyzing captured image data and identifying a glass sheet as one of a set of known types of parts and thereafter and positioning the glass sheet on the support frame to support the glass sheet based on the shape analysis of the part.
