SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing methanol, said method comprising contacting H2 and CO2 with a solid catalyst at temperature of 200 to 300 °C and pressure of reagents from 150 to 500 bar, wherein the reagent pressure is equal to the sum of the partial pressures H2 and CO2, where the molar ratio of H2 to CO2 is x:1.0, where x is from 2.5 to 3.5; and the catalyst contains: (i) a copper component which is Cu, CuO, Cu2O or a mixture of two or three of them, and (ii) ZnO, wherein the catalyst has a specific copper surface area of at least 10 m2/g catalyst.
EFFECT: excellent CO2 conversion (for example, 90 %) and selectivity to methanol (>95 %) can be achieved by the method according to the invention.
