SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of converting biomass to furfural and producing lignin-based solvents used in converting biomass to furfural. Disclosed is a method of converting biomass to furfurol, consisting in acid-catalyzed splitting of biomass material containing pentosan in a splitting vessel for producing a split product stream containing C5-carbohydrates and solid substances, containing cellulose. Split product stream is divided into a stream of liquid products in which at least 50 wt % carbohydrate compounds are C5-carbohydrate compounds, and a solid product stream comprising lignin and cellulose. Stream of solid products is brought into contact with an organic solvent, thereby converting at least a portion of the lignin into a phenol solvent. C5-carbohydrates in a stream of liquid products are subjected to a dehydration reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst and a two-phase mixture, containing aqueous phase and water-immiscible organic phase, wherein the organic phase which does not miscible with water contains at least a portion of the phenol solvent obtained from the stream of solid products for producing furfural or a furan derivative. Stream of dehydration products is separated into an aqueous reusable stream and a stream of organic products containing furfural, which after furfurol extraction is returned to dehydration stage.

EFFECT: technical result is the development of a technological and economical method of converting biomass to furfurol, which does not require use of a metallic catalyst.
